Pass Adventures

I drove over to the Methow via the North Cascades Highway on Friday. It was raining most of the way, and even some snow mixed in at the very top of the passes. Still, it was a pretty uneventful drive, just couldn't see much of the scenery. Today was a bit different. It was sunny and beautiful, but we were just getting into the rhythm of the trip when we saw a police car with flashing lights and several cars ahead. As I got closer and slowed, we saw that this boulder was the reason. Fortunately, no one had been hit by it. The officer was simply directing traffic, as it blocked the entire eastbound lane. I wanted to take a picture as we approached, but he waved me through. So I pulled into the next turnout, and took this picture looking back at it.

A close up view of the boulder dwarfing the police car. You wouldn't want to even be grazed by that!
This was about 1 mile east of Washington pass.

The rest of the drive was uneventful. We stopped to stretch our legs and take a few pictures at the Diablo Lake lookout.

And there were beautiful lupines lining the road between Newhalem and Marblemount.
